Can you get benefits for emotional trauma after a work accident?

Not every injury shows up on the surface. Emotional trauma from a workplace incident can affect your daily life, relationships, and even your ability to work. In Ohio, workers’ compensation may cover certain mental health conditions—but only under specific conditions.

What counts as emotional trauma under workers’ comp?

In Ohio, emotional or psychological conditions alone typically don’t qualify unless they’re linked to a physical injury. For example, if you suffer PTSD after a serious fall or violent incident at work, you may qualify. However, stress from heavy workloads or arguments with coworkers usually won’t be enough.

Your emotional condition must be diagnosed by a licensed mental health professional. Conditions like anxiety, depression, and PTSD may be covered if they result from a related physical injury. The Bureau of Workers’ Compensation (BWC) looks closely at the medical connection between your mental health and the workplace event.

How do you prove emotional trauma?

You need medical documentation that supports your diagnosis and shows a direct link to the workplace incident. Reports from psychologists or psychiatrists are important, as well as consistent treatment records. Your claim becomes stronger if you also suffered a physical injury during the same incident.

Statements from coworkers, supervisors, or anyone who witnessed the event can also help. Keep records of work absences and treatment appointments. The more evidence you gather, the more clearly your case connects the trauma to the job.

What if there’s no physical injury?

Ohio generally does not cover mental conditions that happen without a physical injury. If you experience emotional harm without any physical impact—like witnessing a traumatic event—it likely won’t qualify under current law. There are some exceptions in extreme cases, but they’re rare and hard to prove.
