Highway accidents are a risk for construction workers in Ohio

On Behalf of | Aug 23, 2022 | Workers' Compensation

The highways in Ohio are seemingly always under construction. For workers in the field, there are real risks that are created by being on these highways while working with heavy machinery, chemicals and power tools.

The high speeds in Ohio, combined with busy routes, can make working on I-77 or I-71, for example, dangerous and deadly. Drivers often ignore the work zone speed limits, and there are a number of hazards that lead to questions about safety while on the job.

Why are Ohio workers at risk?

Thinking about Ohio, there are a few reasons why construction workers are at risk. First, they are working on main interstates and routes that are traveled by thousands of people each day. Sometimes, these routes are the main arteries into big cities or populated areas, meaning that there are few alternatives to being on the highway. Even reducing traffic down to a single lane doesn’t really help, because traffic jams occur and create the risk for road rage and other major concerns.

Ohio isn’t in the top 5 worse states for construction deaths, those are Texas, Florida, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Tennessee, and California, but it still has a significant number of injuries and deaths to be concerned about.

Common causes of construction accidents in Ohio and other states include:

  • Transportation events, such as being hit by a vehicle in the work zone.
  • Getting hit by a vehicle that is backing up.
  • Machinery-related problems.

It’s unfortunate, but the majority of all work zone deaths between 2011 and 2017 were linked to vehicle collisions. That’s why it’s so important for flaggers and signs to warn about upcoming construction areas and to have vehicles reduce their speeds before they enter the work zones.

When workers are injured, there are options for compensation

If a worker is injured on the job, they have a right to look into seeking workers’ compensation. Workers’ compensation is designed for people who have been harmed while doing their jobs, whether the injuries come from a work hazard or an outside force. If you’re hurt, remember that workers’ compensation could be there to help you get the care you need as you recover.
