Complications in your pursuit of disability benefits

On Behalf of | Dec 29, 2019 | Social Security Disability

If you applied for disability benefits, it is because you are unable to work due to a mental issue or a physical limitation. This is a direct threat to your financial stability, and it’s important that you secure financial help. Once you complete your application and send in all of the appropriate paperwork, you may think that simply waiting for approval is all that’s left.

However, it is usually not that easy. Many initial disability claims come back denied, and applicants have to take additional steps just to get what they need. This feels like a setback, but through appeals and other steps, you can continue your pursuit of financial support. It may help to learn about the various reasons why the Social Security Administration denies claims.

Who qualifies?

The SSA holds to a strict definition of what counts as a disabling medical condition. Even if you have a serious mental or physical problem, that does not necessarily mean the SSA will agree that you are not capable of finding some form of employment. One of the main eligibility requirements is that there must be proof that your disability will last for at least 12 months or the rest of your life.

It is fairly common for disability claims to come back denied. Some of the most common reasons for the SSA to deny an application include the following:

  • You did not include enough medical documentation in your claim.
  • It is not clear that your medical condition is permanent or long-term.
  • Your condition could be related to drug or alcohol use.
  • There is not enough evidence that your condition keeps you from working.
  • You did not follow treatment directions from your doctor.
  • The SSA was not able to contact you regarding your claim.
  • There was a problem or error in your application paperwork.

If your claim came back denied, the SSA will include the reason for it in a letter to you. With this information, you can begin working to rectify the problem and take the next step.

Don’t fight alone

You do not have to pursue disability benefits alone. Many applicants find it helpful to work with an experienced Ohio disability attorney even from the initial application. With the right support, you will be able to complete paperwork correctly, gather the necessary paperwork and avoid preventable setbacks. It’s a complex and intimidating process, and you may want to start with a complete assessment of your case.
