When you’re hurt in Ohio while you’re working your job, you have the right to make a claim for workers’ compensation as long as you’re not self-employed. To make this claim, you have to file a First Report of Injury and mail it into the Bureau of Workers’ Compensation.

In cases where you’re hurt on the job, it’s normal for your employer to take the lead and file the appropriate paperwork for you. He may ask you to sign documents or to collect medical information to turn into the bureau. Medical providers can also file claims for workers’ compensation, so make sure to tell the doctor who assists you that you were hurt at work.

Once your claim is filed, it can take up to 28 days for it to process. During that time, you can continue to receive medical care and treatments as needed. If the claim is denied, you may want to appeal that decision with the help of your attorney. If it is accepted, then you will receive information on the accepted claim and what help you are entitled to.

You are always entitled to medical care for your injury, but make sure that the doctor you see is one covered by your employer’s coverage. Normally, there is a doctor who is designated for your care, so seeing one who is not may affect your workers’ compensation. If you want to change physicians, you can notify the managed care organization to make that request. If your employer is self-insured, then you will need to make the request directly to your employer.
