Social Security Administration tries to reclaim invalid debt

When you’re hurt at work, you deserve to seek compensation for your injuries. In many cases, Social Security disability will kick in to help provide you with the benefits you need. One thing you will want to make sure of is that you’re receiving the right amount of money for your disability, or you could end up in trouble with the Social Security Administration. That responsibility, though, should not fall entirely on you or your children. According to this article, a father’s children ended up with bills related to Social Security overpayments, but at least one of them has finally been cleared of the debt.

If you’re seeking Social Security income in Ohio, then this story may make you think about how it could affect you in the long run, especially if you accept more than you need. In this girl’s case, she was nearly 18 when she received a notice that she was responsible for repaying some of her father’s debt, despite the fact that she was under 18 and had not received the money herself.

When she asked about why she was having to pay the debt, the Social Security office couldn’t tell her. Neither could her father. Her three other siblings were also told they owed the administration; their father was also allegedly responsible for some of the $60,000 of overpayments the administration made.

The girl’s father had filed for disability in 1998, which tied into a recent report from the Social Security Administration that stated the agency would no longer collect debts over 10 years old. That made her debt one that should never have been reclaimed by the agency. According to the news, the agency has refunded her money, and the now 24-year-old woman will no longer have her taxes held by the agency.
