Many applications for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits are denied by the Social Security Administration (SSA). Statistics support this, with roughly 70 percent of initial applications failing to be approved by claims adjudicators. In 2010, SSA reports that only 27 percent of all adjudications were approved. There are probably as many reasons for this as there are applicants.
Even after the Social Security Administration approves benefits, it can be a long wait to receive a payout. In Fulton County, Ohio and throughout the United States, injured and disabled persons who qualify for Social Security disability have had to fight to get approved, and then can face additional wait time in collecting the benefits they need and deserve. During this time, many families will shift from middle-class status into poverty.
