It’s time to start thinking about work safety and holidays

On Behalf of | Oct 4, 2019 | Workplace Accidents

It’s only the beginning of the fall season, but evidence of the fast-approaching holiday season are everywhere. In some Ohio retail stores, Christmas decorations are already out even though Halloween is still a few weeks away. Like it or not, the busyness of the end of the year will be here soon, which means it’s time to start thinking about workplace safety during the holidays.

In many different types of jobs, the Christmas season represents an increase in clients, transactions and job requests. This means more people are working more hours and doing more tasks. It may also mean that people are more likely to experience a workplace injury. There are things that Ohio employers can do now to prepare for this time of year and reduce the chance of an accident.

Staying safe during the hustle and bustle

Often, companies will hire additional help to assist during the holiday rush. When a worker is not as experienced, he or she may be more prone to injury. This can be especially true in jobs that involve lifting, moving heavy objects, driving machinery and doing manual labor. Employers can take the following steps early to prepare for this and get workers ready for the end-of-the-year push:

  • Start now with teaching, implementing and enforcing new safety habits.
  • Train workers to do their specific tasks as safely and efficiently as possible.
  • Teach proper body movement when lifting, moving, etc., which can help a worker avoid injuries.

It can take months or weeks to teach new safety measures and adjust to new habits in the workplace. By starting now, it will make it easier to stay safe when things get busy. Of course, even with extensive training and safety measures, workers may still experience injuries while on the road. This is why it is also important for employers to educate workers on what to do in case they need to file a workers’ compensation claim.

Your right to safety

You have the right to a reasonable expectation of safety in the workplace. You also have the right to seek benefits and support in case you experience an injury while at work. Through your employer’s workers’ compensation insurance, you may be able to get what you need for your recovery, medical bills and other losses. After an accident, it may be useful to seek an assessment of your case and explanation of the specific options you have.
