How schizophrenia can make it impossible to work

Given how it is often portrayed in the media, people in the greater Columbus area may not fully understand how schizophrenia really works. For example, not everyone who has this condition is honestly going to believe that they are more than one person at the same time.

Still, schizophrenia is in fact a serious mental disorder that can make it very hard for a person to find or maintain employment.

Someone who experiences schizophrenia will, to some extent, have what is called periodic psychotic episodes, meaning the person to some degree loses touch with reality altogether. The person may sense things that in reality do not exist. Hearing voices or seeing objects that do not exist are symptoms of schizophrenia.

The thinking of someone with this condition is delusional, that is, not based on any rational fact. A person with this condition may also show symptoms in the form of incoherent speaking or odd behaviors.

Schizophrenia has no one cause. Experts believe that, to some extent, a person is genetically predisposed to the condition. However, one's environment and pattern of thinking are also contributing factors. It is estimated that about 1 out of 100 people in the general population suffer from schizophrenia.

A person suffering from schizophrenia will likely require some potent medication as well as ongoing therapy and care. In many cases, being able to do some sort of work is important for a patient, but this is not always possible given the symptoms of the condition.

Fortunately, an Ohio resident with schizophrenia can qualify for Social Security Disability benefits for mental conditions, provided of course that they meet the criteria of the Social Security Administration. Presenting one's case to the Administration may be best accomplished with the help of an experienced attorney.
