Social Security Disability payments and evidence

On Behalf of | Apr 8, 2016 | Social Security Disability

If you’re not able to work because of an accident that resulted in a disability, it’s important that you know if you’re eligible for Social Security Disability payments.

These payments are made by the federal Social Security Administration in one of two forms. You can either receive Supplemental Security Income, SSI, or Social Security Disability Insurance, SSDI. To obtain either, you need to provide evidence that your disability is affecting your ability to work and earn an income.

A disability is not just a short-term illness or injury. It is a physical or medical condition that will last for at least a year; it may also be a condition that is expected to end in death. The person applying for Social Security benefits must not be able to perform substantial work. The severity of your disability will affect your case. The administration may base its decision on how you lift, walk, stand, sit, communicate, and other factors.

To prove your disability, you will need to provide medical evidence. You will want to get information about your illness from your physician. Laboratory findings and reports about your symptoms can also be used. Besides this impairment, you need to show that you can’t find meaningful employment. For instance, if you’re blind, you may still be able to perform some kinds of work, but the level of your impairment may make a difference to your case for disability payments. Your attorney can help you get your paperwork in order to make a claim. Any mistakes made can slow the process or potentially result in a claim being denied.
