Work zone dangers and statistics, wrongful deaths, and injuries

On Behalf of | Apr 14, 2015 | Wrongful Death

Work zones are some of the most dangerous places to be, especially when you work near roadways that are still in use. The U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration works to report all injuries and fatalities in these locations, so records can prove what works and doesn’t work for worker safety.

With data from 2010 released currently, you can see around how many crashes took place in the United States that year. In work zones, there were 87,606 crashes. In total, there were 5,419,345 roadway crashes in 2010 across the United States.

Are work zone crashes often fatal? According to this data, only .6 percent were fatal, while 30 percent resulted in injuries. The remaining 69 percent were crashes involving only property damage and not any personal injuries.

When’s the safest time to work on the roads? Surprisingly, not during the daylight hours. In fact, most fatal crashes (70 percent) took place between 8:00 a.m. and 4:59 p.m., the times when most people are heading to school, work or to participate in other activities. The results from various reports showed that working at night wasn’t significantly of higher risk than working during the day, and looking at the number of fatalities that took place between those hours, it may be safer to work at night.

Are workers hurt often on the roads? Yes. The research shows that one worker is injured approximately every 14 minutes in a work zone. That means that there are around 96 injuries each day in work zones, making worker injuries highly likely for many people who spend their time repairing the roadways.
