Work-related wrongful deaths and litigation: Your choice

On Behalf of | Aug 27, 2014 | Wrongful Death

Work-related deaths are typically preventable, which is why they’re the center of controversy when they take place. In the United States in 2007, there were 5,657 workplace fatalities; they happened across many industries.

You may know that the Ohio Bureau of Labor Statistics has said that a construction accident is more likely to result in death than in any other kind of workplace accident. On top of that, over one in five fatalities take place in construction sites; that could be due to the number of people working in dangerous fields, but also because they are working with dangerous and heavy equipment.

For example, working with heavy machinery, power tools and hazardous substances puts those workers at risk every day. Working in mines that could collapse, drilling with tools that are potentially dangerous or working at heights where falling is always a possibility with any simple error or poor safety equipment are just some of the risks construction workers face on the job.

Those incredibly dangerous situations are more likely to cause fatalities. In many situations, safety equipment and procedures are followed, but tragedies still happen. Finding out that safety equipment wasn’t working right or that there was an oversight while your loved one was working isn’t acceptable. When they’re the victim of a wrongful death, that means that you may have a right to compensation.

The lawsuit isn’t only for you; if the defendant is found to have a dangerous workplace or to not be following the right standards, the courts can also do something about that. If you’re interested in learning more about wrongful death in the workplace, visit our workplace wrongful death page here.
