After fatal workplace accident, plant is hit with huge fine

Pilkington, a company that is based out of Toledo, Ohio, had a worker die in one of its glass plants in 2010. The plant in question was in Indiana, and the worker was crushed by machinery, leading to his death. The Indiana Occupational Safety and Health Administration inspected the plant at that point, found a number of safety violations and asked that they be fixed.

However, the IOSHA went back to the plant in 2012 to see what changes had been made, and they found that there were still many violations. They have now issued a record fine of $495,500 to the company as a response. They have also told them that they have only until the end of the year to fix the issues.

Among other things, the plant needs to post more signs that warn workers about specific hazards. They also have to give training to the people who still work there so that they adequately know how to operate the machinery and work in the plant. Other, non-specified violations will have to be addressed by a dedicated team of employees until they are all taken care of to the satisfaction of the IOSHA.

The company has released a statement regarding its dedication to providing workers with a safe working environment.

A serious work accident can lead to months of medical care and lost wages. Those who are hurt while on the job have a right to workers' compensation to cover these costs. If it is shown that the employer has failed to create a safe working environment, injured workers can look holding employers liable for their injuries and damages.
