Officer saves construction worker with life-threatening injuries

Workplaces sometimes have dangerous situations that can result in serious injury, and that's why safety should be taken seriously. Even with the best safety equipment or buddy systems in place, injuries do happen. This story, could have ended tragically, but fortunately had a positive outcome. According to news from Sept. 26, a quick-thinking officer may have saved the life of an injured construction worker when he applied first aid at the scene.

According to the news report, the construction worker had been working at the construction site along Garden State Parkway when his diamond saw kicked back off a concrete pipe and cut into his torso. His injuries were allegedly bad enough that they went to the bone; a deep gash was bleeding when the officer arrived around 3:00 p.m. The trooper reported that he took the combat gauze out of his car and applied it to the man, since he knew that it was made to help clot the blood quickly.

The victim, a 31-year-old man, may have survived due to this act. The bandages may have stopped or slowed the bleeding enough for him to receive the care he needed. He was doing well enough to talk to reporters in the following days. He was rushed by ambulance to Jersey Shore Medical Center where he stayed to recover from the serious injury following his accident. There was no indication about whether the worker was with coworkers at the time of the accident, and no negligence was discussed in the report.

You probably don't expect to get hurt at work, but instances like this construction worker's accident can happen, especially in dangerous workplaces. High-risk occupations are just that, and if you're hurt on the job, there may be steps you can take to have your medical bills and time off work paid for.
