Brain injuries may lead to many more complications down the road

Like workers in other cities and states, those who are employed in Franklin, Ohio, are susceptible to injuries while on the job. Though you may not think twice about it during the day, a workplace accident can leave you severely injured in the blink of an eye. Some may leave a person with a broken bone or a major lesion - blatant injuries that are obvious to those who look at the victim. But then there are other injuries that can occur and leave a person looking perfectly normal, such as a traumatic brain injury.

In a worst-case scenario, a person who suffers a brain injury will need permanent caretaking. But not all brain injurys result in major damage. Many leave the brain scarred, though. According to a recent study, brain damage caused by a TBI may be a contributing factor to the likelihood that a person will have a stroke later in life. Researchers looked at databases with information from more than 1.1 million people who had been discharged from the emergency department of a California hospital between 2005 and 2009.

More than 400,000 people had suffered trauma with brain injury while more than 700,000 people had suffered trauma with no brain injury. After 28 months had passed since the injury, researchers looked to see if the individuals had suffered a stroke. Approximately 1.1 percent of the study population had experienced a stroke. Looking at just the individuals who had suffered trauma but no brain injury, only 0.9 percent had suffered strokes. This difference has led researchers to believe that those who have suffered a TBI 30 percent more likely to have a stroke.

Because of complications like this, it is important that any individual who suffers a workplace injury speak with an attorney. By bringing your case to a legal professional, you may be able to file a lawsuit that seeks damages for past and future medical expenses.
