Crane boom crushes two men at steel plant site

On Behalf of | May 16, 2013 | Construction Accidents

Two men who worked for Beaver Excavating are dead. They were at the Timken Co. Faircrest Steel Plant when an on-the-job accident occurred. An official with the Stark County Coroner’s Office said that a crane was involved in the incident. The heavy piece of machinery reportedly was the reason for their deaths.

The facility is located on Faircrest Street SW in Perry Township, Ohio. In February of last year, Timken Co. declared that it would be investing $225 million into the Faircrest Steel Plant. This would give the plant a new large-boom continuous caster and ladle refiner, expanding the plant’s production by 25 percent. The crane accident occurred near the area where the caster will be located. According to reports, the two men were in the vicinity, located behind the plant, around 12:50 p.m.

They were preparing to lift a load with the crane. The official from the coroner’s office reported that workers from Timken and Beaver heard something snap before the boom of the crane fell on top of the two men. Both of them were killed instantly. The coroner pronounced the two men dead at 1:21 p.m. A fire rescue truck, medic unit and police officers were sent to the scene soon after the accident. No one else was physically injured but the crane operator was taken to Aultman Hospital for evaluation. It is possible that the incident caused some emotional or mental damage to the operator.

A spokesperson for Timken Co. said that the Occupational Safety and Health Administration is aware of the accident. He also noted that both construction and steel production at the plant have ceased. The former will be postponed until further notice while the latter was out of respect for the deceased and was expected to begin again on the following Monday. If you or a loved one has been severely hurt in a construction accident, consider speaking with a lawyer to determine what your options are.
