Denials and delays are an increasing problem for SSD claimants

Even after the Social Security Administration approves benefits, it can be a long wait to receive a payout. In Fulton County, Ohio and throughout the United States, injured and disabled persons who qualify for Social Security disability have had to fight to get approved, and then can face additional wait time in collecting the benefits they need and deserve. During this time, many families will shift from middle-class status into poverty.

The system of Social Security disability claims operates on denials and delays. It is not uncommon to be denied on the first application and then face additional denials and appeals. For permanently disabled Americans in need of benefits, the SSA caseload is becoming a significant burden with severe economic challenges. With the growing number of aging baby boomers, this federal agency and the Social Security safety net is under stress.

For many claimants, the system delays are a matter of life or death. The agency reported that 2,000 cases were dismissed last year because the claimant died. Those who apply for benefits often wait for years, go through a series of benefits denials and appeals, and then be forced to provide significant medical documentation that many patients never had or can't access because of a lack of insurance.

Collecting disability payments often results in complicated legal battles. Critics believe that the system is stacked against claimants. An average of two-thirds of applications are denied from low-income disabled persons and more than half the claims submitted by disabled workers. The system is bogged down and becoming increasingly stressed. Claimants may face even more hurdles than they have in the past.

If you or someone you love is in need of benefits, it is important to consult with an advocate as soon as possible to file your claim, collect documentation, and begin the fight for your benefits.
