Construction worker injured while working on traffic light

A man working for a sub-contracting construction company out of Fairfield, Ohio, was recently injured in a construction zone. His serious injuries saw him transported to one hospital then transferred to another. His current condition is unknown, but physicians did report on the severity of his injuries.

The construction accident occurred while the man, 40, was working in a construction zone located at the intersection of Clyde T. Barbour Parkway and Kentucky 9 at around 8:15 p.m. earlier this month. The 40-year-old was using the bucket extension arm on a 1999 Ford work truck while working on a traffic light. The light, overhanging the roadway, placed him over the road, as well. While the man was working, the bucket was struck by a 2007 International tractor-trailer.

Investigators found that the driver of the tractor-trailer, a 41-year-old man, said that he failed to properly judge the distance and collided with the bucket. The 40-year-old construction worker was thrown from the extension arm and landed on the road. A Kentucky state trooper reported that no person was present to inform drivers of the man's presence. In addition, the worker was not wearing a three-point harness, which may have saved him from his injuries.

It was not clear if either the worker or the employer would be cited for a lack of safety precautions.

Work zone signs are reportedly located in the area as the project involves a new overpass. The injured man's employer, Bansal Construction, is sub-contracting work from Eaton Asphalt, according to an information officer with the Kentucky Department of Highways District 9 office.

Currently, the investigation into the accident remains open. When the crash occurred, a number of emergency services showed up including the state highway department, a local fire department, a county sheriff's department, a local police department and two agents from the state police.
