Immediate nutrition fosters recovery in Ohio brain injury victims

In recent posts, we have written about the most effective treatment for traumatic brain injuries. From football players to military personnel and car accident victims, the scope of individuals who suffer from traumatic brain injuries is large.

After Rep. Gabrielle Giffords was shot in the head, the media focused even more attention on traumatic brain injuries. Ohio has introduced numerous bills geared toward reducing concussions and other brain injuries in athletes. Now the military is also funding research to learn about the most effective ways to treat brain injuries.

The Institute of Medicine was commissioned by the military to determine the most effect way to treat brain injuries immediately. According to their research, immediate nutrition can make a large difference in how well and how quickly individuals recover.

For the military, it will become a standard operating practice to provide accident victims with a quick mix of calories, protein and vitamins following an incident that causes head trauma. Civilians could also benefit from that approach.

One researcher with the Institute of Medicine said that more research is needed to determine exactly which food components protect the brain from injury and help prepare it for recovery. They do know that some nutrients - including choline, creatine, n-3 fatty acids and zinc - are particularly effective.

The nutrition was more effective in reducing inflammation in the brain and facilitating a strong recovery when it was provided within the first 24 hours, and then given consistently during the following two weeks. It will be interesting to learn what else the Institute of Medicine learns about effectively treating traumatic brain injuries.
