Workplace Injury Leads to Citations for Ohio's Industrial Ceramic Products

Workplace safety should be a major concern for employers across the nation, but some corporations fall short of the safety standard set out for them. A local Ohio company, Industrial Ceramic Products or ICP, now faces more than a workers' compensation claim after an employee was injured in a workplace accident that occurred at one of their facilities.

The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration cited the corporation for several safety violations and proposed penalties in the amount of $91,500 for the 13 safety violations which they either have to pay or protest within 15 business days after receiving them.

The employee who was injured when he was fixing a jam in a machine suffered an injury resulting in permanent damage to his arm. According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration officials in charge of the investigation, "Failing to properly lock out machinery and electrical equipment from energy sources while workers perform maintenance places them at serious risk of injury."

Of the 13 violations, two of them were considered willful and seven were considered serious. The willful violations included a failure "to establish and enforce energy control procedures and to have guards in place on tube cutters," while the serious violations resulted from inadequate training and a failure to provide protective gear. The investigation into the safety procedures employed by the company began in June of 2010 and concluded mid December.

Industrial Ceramic Products is not unfamiliar with OSHA investigations and procedures. They have been the subject of 10 prior OSHA inspections that resulted in 30 violations.
