America’s top workplace injuries
Liberty Mutual Research Institute for Safety’s most recent top 10 list of workplace accidents provides some interesting insight into the types of serious injuries presently occurring in workplace environments all across the country.
The list, now in its 15th year, was compiled using data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics and the National Academy of Social Insurance. Serious, nonfatal injuries were analyzed and tallied from 2012.
Overexertion, falls at the top of the list
The top, most prevalent nonfatal injury reported was overexertion, defined as the application of too much lifting, pushing, holding, or throwing that result in injury to the body. Overexertion accounted for over 25 percent of all workplace injuries analyzed.
Injury caused by workplace falls landed in second place, accounting for roughly 15 percent of all work injuries. Blows or strikes from objects or machinery were listed in third place, tallying roughly 9 percent of all total injuries. Roadway accidents, slip and falls, and repetitive motions were also among the list.
The continued fight to prevent workplace deaths, injuries
According to the Occupation Safety and Health Administration, the federal agency referred to as OSHA that establishes and enforces U.S. workplace safety regulations, deaths and injuries in the workplace have actually decreased throughout the years. Since the 1970s, workplace fatalities have declined by more than 65 percent. And, injuries and illness at work have gone down by about 67 percent-no doubt due in part to more stringent regulations surrounding employee break times and weekly work allowances that cut down on potential fatigue.
Although such information is good news for American workers, there are so many unnecessary lives still taken and injuries that still occur every day throughout the United States in many different work environments.
Hopefully continued studies, awareness and OSHA policies will help reduce such numbers in the future-particularly as new 21st century technological advancements surface.
